Final drive rebuild

15-01-2021

Final drive rebuilding is a multi-stage process aiming at restoring functionality of a faulty gears. First of all, damages to the final drive must be checked very carefully. By this we mean disassembling the planetary gear completely, washing the parts carefully, and then verifying them carefully one by one. Only after that can we identify the parts that require replacement. It is worth to mention that some original manufacturers offer complete subassemblies only (e.g. complete planetary gears unit), whereas others offer a full range of gear parts. These solutions have their pros and cons. The undoubted advantage of complete subassemblies is their perfect assembly at the factory, which reduces the probability of a mistake at installation to minimum. The largest advantage of the availability of almost all elements of the planetary gears is obviously cost-effectiveness.

Upon verification and cost evaluation, we may proceed to rebuild of the final drive, which consists in replacing all faulty elements with factory new ones. Rebuild final drive is cost-effective only in case of partial damage. In the case of overall damage to the planetary gears, it is much cheaper to purchase a new complete unit instead of replacing its individual elements. Also, remember about micro-damages that may be overlooked during verification by inexperienced engineers, and which will have significant impact on its life.

After the stages listed, the final drive should be tested. Rebuild drives undergo a number of tests at our company, including tightness test. Then, the final drive are lacquered and directed for repeated operation.

At this point it should be noted that no gear unit will work effectively without an appropriate gear oil, replaced at appropriate intervals. With loads currently put on machines, replacement even as frequently as every 250 service hours is recommended.
